Now that summer is officially underway, everyone is bustling about with travel plans; from vacations, family reunions, road trips, etc. It’s a busy and exciting time! No one wants to think about their vehicle breaking down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Safety should always be a part of your decision making process no matter where your travels take you. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you be prepared for any bumps along the road.

One of the most important parts of a road trip is your vehicle! Here are a few things to consider:

  • Is your car in tip top shape? It’s important to have your vehicle inspected before you even leave. Things like making sure your oil change is current, lights are in working order and that tires have been rotated can help give you peace of mind to start your adventure. Also, it’s important to ensure there are no underlying issues that might be exacerbated by the many miles of a long road trip.
  • While on the road. Even if your car checked out in good working order you should still do periodic checks throughout the trip. Thanks to the summer heat, tire blowouts are very common. It’s important to make sure your tires are maintaining a safe air pressure. Also, check on your lights, fluid levels, and windshield wipers. Never let your gas tank drop below a quarter of a tank.
  • You can never be over prepared for an emergency. No one wants to think about the worst happening on a fun vacation, but it’s incredibly important to be prepared for anything. Especially when you could be traveling long stretches of the interstate. Keep emergency items in your trunk with items like: a flashlight, blanket, first aid kit, batteries, a portable phone charger, and a reflective road triangle or vest (should you need to change a tire in the middle of the night).

Your vehicle checks out fine, your bags are packed, and everything is loaded in the car and you’re ready to go. What’s next? You, as the driver, are equally important to ensuring a safe and fun trip.

  • Plan your route. Make sure you have your route mapped out before you leave. It’s also important to make sure someone else knows your plans and let them know when you make it safely. It’s also a good idea to know what the weather is projected to be like as that can have a large impact on your travel.
  • Be aware of what’s going on at your route. It will pay off to do some research and find out of any construction zones or road work. Also, be aware if you will be traveling through any major cities at high traffic times. Have you ever driven through Nashville at eight am? Not fun.
  • Keep your head in the game. Make sure you are well rested for your journey. It’s incredibly dangerous to drive fatigued. Take plenty of breaks to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Also, limit your distractions. While some people like conversation and good tunes to help pass the time, make sure it’s not impacting your ability to focus on the road.
